Public Safety Issue Closes Viewing Platform at Woakwine Cutting

19 November 2015

In the interest of public safety, Council has been forced to close the very popular viewing platform at Woakwine Cutting.

A recent inspection of the platform highlighted a number of structural concerns, which resulted in its temporary closure.

Subsequently Council engaged the services of structural engineering firm Tonkin Consulting, who have provided a detailed assessment of the platform. The assessment confirmed that the structure is unsafe and warrants immediate removal.

“This is a very unfortunate situation with the platform a very popular stop with tourists travelling to the Beachport area” Council’s Director Engineering Services, Peter Halton said. “The structure was built decades ago and allowed the public a bird’s eye view of the Cutting. It was a bit of a thrill due to its height,”

“The detailed report confirmed that corrosion of some of the main support structure is to a point at which the platform it is unsafe and thus Council is planning for its immediate removal.”

“The project for the replacement will be costed and referred to the 2016/17 financial year budget for consideration, with Council also looking at potential funding opportunities.” Mr Halton added.
