Staff and parents of the Gladys Smith Early Learning Centre in Millicent are busily planning a celebration for its 40th anniversary.
The celebration will be held on Sunday, July 30 from 11 am to 2pm and will include activities for the entire family.
The centre was opened on the 12 July 1977 by the then Deputy Premier of South Australia, Des Corcoran. It was named after the incumbent Mayor Gladys Smith, who had made a tremendous contribution to the community.
Mrs Smith was a passionate advocate for the establishment of the child care facility as she believed that every woman should be given the opportunity to pursue employment. She lobbied the government tirelessly, and was successful in gaining funding to build the centre.
In the ensuing years, many children have experienced quality education and care from dedicated, passionate educators. In its opening months in 1977, there were over 150 enrolments, and to this day the facility still provides regular care for up to 145 children from 105 local families.
“The quality of care provided to the children over the years has always been exceptionally high,” Centre Director, Mrs Clara Walker said.
“We are very proud to be maintaining this standard despite changing conditions and standards in the field of Early Childhood Education and Care. The Centre recently received a rating of ‘Exceeding’ in the National Quality Standards.
“It is a highly valued service in our community. We are well supported and assist many young families from Millicent and surrounds.
“The Centre’s Parent Committee is hard at work planning a fitting celebration to acknowledge our 40 year anniversary. It will be a day of fun including face painting, balloon animals, a petting zoo, fairy floss, sausage sizzle, games and a lucky door prize.”
All past and current children, families and staff are welcome to come along and enjoy the day and celebrate an important service within our community.
