A new community engagement initiative for Penola and Coonawarra is being trialled by Wattle Range Council starting in February.
Riddoch Ward’s two elected representatives, Councillors Dean Burrow and Rick Paltridge, would like to give members of the Penola and Coonawarra community the chance to table ideas with them at an informal monthly get-together on the first Friday of every month.
The initiative is an extension of the monthly appointments that have been held by the Wattle Range Mayor and CEO across the region to meet with individual residents.
“Dean and I are keen to hear suggestions about where locals think there are opportunities to enhance Coonawarra and Penola and surrounding regions, especially in the lead up to our annual budget deliberations” said Councillor Paltridge.
“It doesn’t matter how big or small the ideas are, we just want to learn about what is important to locals, and where there might be an opportunity for Council support.”
“Some local residents might be sitting on a great idea but are just not sure how to progress it, so over a cuppa they can at least table it with Dean or I and we can begin to explore what might be required.”
However, Councillor Paltridge did clarify that the engagement initiative was not designed to replace existing customer service strategies employed by the Council to handle day-to-day inquiries. “Dean and I aren’t the first point-of-contact for handling issues that require immediate attention by Council as these issues should be directed to the Customer Service team who are trained to provide assistance to residents” said Councillor Paltridge.
He said that in the interests of making it easier for people to remember where to meet each month, they would start at one local café, and rotate to other like businesses on a yearly basis.
The conversation will start at Vintage Café at 9am-11am on Friday 1st February, 2019.
